The importance of resizing

Suppose you are recording a Netflix movie played full screen on your HD computer monitor. If your Internet connection isn't fast enough or your computer's CPU gets overloaded, the quality of the recorded video is likely to be lower than the original. Often, the issue isn’t your computer but the web browser (like Chrome), which reduces the broadcasted video size (bit rate) to maintain smooth data flow without buffering or to avoid overloading the CPU. You can check the broadcast’s size and other parameters by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D on your keyboard with the Netflix video being only video running on the desktop. Furthermore, repeated browser reconnections to accommodate a smaller video size may sometime lead to out of sync audio.

On a 2K or 4K display, this issue can become even more severe. In reality, most streaming videos are transmitted at a resolution of 1920x1080 or lower, so capturing the full UHD screen is unnecessary. Browsers like Chrome and others continue to reduce the size of the streamed video by short reconnections, leading to the problems mentioned earlier.

One alternative for the screen capture programs is to include resizing software that downscale the recorded video size to smaller sizes while keeping the playback in full screen. Attempts by some screen capture programs like OBS to do this on computers not using NVIDIA were not successful due to the high amount of computations. The result are recorded videos with poor video quality and choppy motion. Computers using the NVIDIA hardware do not need resizing. Even less expensive NVIDIA computers and laptops can screen capture high quality Fullscreen UHD displays without the need for resizing.

WM Capture uses a simple approach by resizing the entire video window to a smaller resolution, such as 1920x1080 or 1280x720, during recording. It achieves this by preserving the previously selected playback area of the video window. When the recording is played back, the computer can utilize the upscaling capabilities of common media players like Windows Media Player, VLC, or the DVD player to enlarge the smaller recorded window to full screen. This approach results in video quality that is close to the original and maintains a high frame rate when viewed on high-resolution displays.
