NVIDIA System - WM Capture D3D recording

WM Capture  configuration settings for a Windows PC with an Intel processor and an Nvidia GPU are shown below. These settings were determined using a Lenovo Legion 5 Laptop with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU.

For a Dual monitor system, use Windows Display settings to assign your primary monitor then open the Nvidia Control Panel, use 'Manage 3D settings' and 'Manage display settings' to adjust the 3D and the Display. (see below recommended WM Capture screen capture settings and also suggestions for recording Fullscreen video games.).

Note: The Intel Quick Sync encoder cannot be used in Screen Capture mode unless the NVIDIA Control Panel is configured as described here. See below the section Setting up the Quick Sync encoder for Screen Capture mode. (This restriction does not affect the D3D recording mode, where the Quick Sync encoder functions as QSV or QSV-GPU).

3D3 recording modes

Setting up Single monitor

Open NVIDIA Control Panel

Manage 3D Settings  -- Auto-select,
Manage Display Settings -- Integrated graphics

monitor 1 main, record on 1, qsv.qsv-gpu OK, nvenc NOT OK

Manage 3D Settings  -- High Performance NVIDIA,
Manage Display Settings -- NVIDIA

monitor 1 main, record on 1, qsv,qsv-gpu NOT OK, nvenc OK

For recording games in windowed or windowless mode, we suggest using one of the settings mentioned above, preferably with single monitor, High Performance NVIDIA, NVIDIA display, and the nvenc encoder.

Setting up a Dual monitor system

If a second monitor is connected while WM Capture is running, WM Capture needs to be restarted. WM Capture always opens on Windows’ main monitor unless you manually move its window on the second monitor.

Open Windows Display Settings, set up Monitor 1 or Monitor 2 as the main monitor

Open NVIDIA Control Panel: setting up the 3D Settings and the Display Settings allows different D3D recording capbilities as shown below

Manage 3D Settings  -- Auto-select,
Manage Display Settings -- Optimus

monitor 1 main, record on 1, qsv,qsv-gpu OK, nvenc NOT OK
monitor 1 main, record on 2, qsv,qsv-gpu / nvenc NOT OK
monitor 2 main, record on 2, qsv OK / nvenc OK, qsv-gpu NOT OK
monitor 2 main, record on 1, qsv,qsv-gpu / nvenc NOT OK

Manage 3D Settings  -- High Performance NVIDIA,
Manage Display Settings -- Optimus

monitor 1 main, record on 1, qsv,qsv-gpu / nvenc NOT OK
monitor 1 main, record on 2, qsv / nvenc  OK, qsv-gpu NOT OK
monitor 2 main, record on 2, qsv / nvenc OK, qsv-gpu NOT OK
monitor 2 main, record on 1, qsv,qsv-gpu / nvenc NOT OK

Note: the computer used in this test was not recognized by Nvidia as a secondary or primary monitor, and the Nvidia driver only identified Optimus as the main display configuration.

Screen Capture (CAP) recording modes

Setting up the Quick Sync encoder for Screen Capture mode

Open NVIDIA Control Panel

Single monitor
Manage 3D Settings
 -- Auto-select, Integrated graphics
Manage Display Settings -- Optimus

Dual monitor - see Notes
Manage 3D Settings  -- Auto-select
Manage Display Settings -- Optimus

Note 1: To enable Quick Sync on a NVIDIA dual monitor system, WM Capture must open on the computer primary display (a laptop display for example). Recording can be done on either one of the two monitors.

Note 2. The current WM Capture version does not support NVIDIA NVENC encoder for Screen Capture recording.

Recording Fullscreen games (simple rules) - WM Capture D3D Settings

When using an NVIDIA dual-monitor setup, a game configured to run in Fullscreen mode will usuaklly launch on the NVIDIA monitor. WM Capture does not fully automate handling this scenario. We recommend either playing the game in windowed mode, setting monitor #1 as the primary display and launching the game there (if possible), or disconnecting the second monitor and playing the game on the primary monitor. This also holds true for dual monitor systems without NCIDIA.

Try to match the recording video size (Mark setting) with the game's Video setup. If you can access the game Video setup, select 1280x720. If that option is unavailable, try setting the D3D recording size to Fullscreen.

On NVIDIA systems, configure the NVIDIA Control Panel as suggested here or use your preferred settings.

If recording fails on an NVIDIA dual display system, disconnect the second monitor and try recording on your primary display.

Recording might not work with all Fullscreen games. Try the game windowed mode. WM Capture D3D test only supports windowed videos.
